Character Entity CodesCharacter entities provide a special way to insert any printable character into your HTML document. Some are printed characters that are not easily accessed from the keyboard. Some of them are on your keyboard but cause strange things to happen if you type them directly into your code. Some, like < and > are interpreted by your web browser as HTML code delimiters. Printing them directly in a chat board, for example, seldom provides good results. But there is no need to use convoluted contructions, substitute one type of brackets for another or leave spaces in your code examples posted on chat boards. Using character entity codes, you can type your code so it looks just the way it should, like this: <A HREF="uri.to.link.site.html"><IMG SRC="uri.to.graphic.jpg"></A> ; To type a special character, like & or < or >, etc. find it in the list below and find it's code or entity name. The 'code' will start with an & followed by a number sign, a number and finally a semi-colon, like this: ¦ which would give you the broken vertical bar character: ¦ . The 'entity name' also starts with an & and ends with a semi-colon but instead of the number sign and number it uses an abbreviation of the actual character name which is typically easier to remember. The 'entity name' for the broken vertical bar is ¦ and it also gives you the broken vertical bar character: ¦ .
